Storage Basics

In our day to day life we deal with a lot of data. Now the question is where to store them.

When we talk about data its not just a ~10GB, 10TB data but we are talking about data in very big number which all industrial/Company’s data. To store this data we need storage boxes.

There are a lot of vendors out there to proide you storage space like EMC,NETAPP,HP,IBM and now we have cloud option too like AZURE,AWS,GCP etc. Before proceeding with cloud or how to store data we must understand the technology which we used to access or store the data in on prem systems.

There are 2 technologies that we use:SAN and NAS.

SAN (Storage Area Network):

SAN provides block level access to data. SAN uses FC, ISCSI,FCoE,NVMe protocols. In SAN,Host OS controls the filesystem.

NAS (Network attached storage):

NAS provides file level access to the data on the storage system.Data is accesible from the network. Protocols like CIFS(Common internet file system) which is dilect of SMB , NFS(network file system). In NAS storage system controls the file system.

This is all for basics, stay tuned for more storage blogs.
